Now, before you let that go to your heads, you are NOT top crewman material. Not yet. Not until I've seen you work. And I'm going to keep a sharp eye on each and every one of you. If I'm not there, somebody else will be. Intelligence is a different world, and it's a very dangerous one. It's one thing to mess up and get yourself killed in some foolhardy stunt, but on a starship you're responsible for the lives of others. Keep that in mind. Casualty rates are high, they always have been, and all it takes is one slip up.
I assume you've all been briefed on the Akira class cruiser, but I'll go over the basics since I'm sure some of you slept through your briefing. You are on a combat vessel. The Malinche was designed with an emphasis on combat capabilities. That doesn't mean we fight every battle, but it does mean that we have the ability to carry fighter craft, land marine forces, and evacuate planets at high speeds. This is vessel designed with efficiency in mind. Your quarters will be smaller than you're used to and there will be more security procedures. The advantages to all this is that you are here to further the Federation and its people.
You may not get all the credit for your actions, you cannot relay messages to friends and family to tell them what your job entails. But YOU know. For those of you who belong in the scientific profession, you will have many opportunities to dazzle us with your ingenuity. Those of you who see yourselves as fighters, you'll get your chance to show us your prowess. But we are here for the Federation. We go where other ships don't, because Starfleet knows we can get a job done. We are also here because we're expendable. That means there will be no last minute rescues, and we are exposed to danger more often than other ships. We're not Section 31, don't get any crazy ideas. Follow your orders and use your head and you'll survive. You might even get a promotion.
You're to report to your department heads. If you're here to take over as a section chief, hurry up and get there. We don't have time for you to laze around, this ship is heading out within the hour. Any questions?
