Racial
Background:
The Bedai have been, for the most part, unknown to the Federation other than a few trade experiences. The race tends to keep to itself, desiring to never again have to deal with the wars that once ravaged its system, turning them into the warriors that they now are.
Their culture is one that could only be thought of as a Klingon with Vulcan logic and control. They prize peace above all else, but are fierce warriors nonetheless. Thier primary philosophy: use knowledge to avoid war, use force to protect one's own.
They have long been reputed to avoid war at all costs... even to the point that they refused to have a hand in the Dominon/Federation war. The only note about them in that confrontation was that one Jem'Hedar ship was sent out to set up camp on the small planet. Not a single bit of the ship was ever found.
The race is very philosophical, seeking peace and contentment in religion and control, but itemizing the benefits of physical training. They see the benefits of combat, as well as the disadvantages.
Personal Background:
Jonias is the son of two Bedai explorers, who were discovered by the Federation only twenty years ago. He is the first of his kind to enter Starfleet, and the first of his kind to ever set foot on any sort of space-faring vessel that could hold more than ten people.
He has never actually lived on a planet, having only spent four years on Terra during his time in the Academy. For this reason, he doesn't really like being planetside, much preferring the safety and comfort of a spacecraft.
His life aboard his parent's ship, and eventually various ships around the central Federation sector, was one of intense training and constant learning. He was rarely given time for simple recreation. Life to his people was one of constant preperation for the battles ahead... where both cunning, prowess, and knowledge were one's greatest weapons. This philosophy has kept with him throughout his life.
Once the Federation was convinced that he was capable enough to join the Acadmy, they allowed him in, upon recommendation from an Admiral who to this day has remained anonymous.

Racial Appearance:
The Bedai are a remarkably "normal"-looking Humanoid race. There are three basic racial differences. The first is their skin hue, which can only be described as a "normal caucasion" with a slightly purple tinge. The second is the ever-popular cranial ridge. Although not as pronounced as a Klingon's, there is a slight crease running from the tip of the browline to the tip of the nose. The third is the most prominent. Instead of body hair, which the Bedai possess none of, there is a grouping of prehensile tendrils on the cranial region. These tendrils are incapable of any actual function... and are considered castoffs from an earlier evolutionary stage... much like the human appendix. They do, however, have the same effect as antenna if torn or cut off, causing immense pain and temporary disorientation.
Personal Appearance:
Jonias is about average in height and weight for a comon Bedai... being 6'1" and 215 pounds. His build is hardly overly muscular, but he does sport a well-toned build. This is slightly deceptive in appearance, however, since his body actually only contains about three percent body fat... a level that would be very detrimental to most humanoids. He has strikingly purple eyes, and his 'hair' (or tendrils) are nearly raven-black.
Physical Training:
Jonias is well-trained in several of his planet's form of martial arts, and is currently looking into the Klingon styles as well. He is a remarkable fighter in this sense, although not one of the best by any means.
He also is athleticly trained, having gone through extensive acrobatic and dance training in the Acadamy, and even before.

Empathic Sense:
For definitive purposes only, Jonias works on an empathic level far above that of NEXTGEN's "Deanna Troi". Single entities can be picked out of large crowds, and at much further distances (for a working limit, half the diameter of Terra). His understanding of said emotions is better than that of the aforementioned empath, and often more specific (such as determing the object of of anger... if not the subsconsicous source).
Empathic Transfer:
Unlike most telepaths out there, The Bedai evolved thier psionic abilities to fit into their warlike ways. This particular skill actually allows the user to infiltrate the mind of their target, and forcibly cause their mind to experience emotions other than their own. Starfleet generally frowns upon the use of this power, typically, as it is highly invasive in nature.
Minor Telepathy:
This is actually limited to those who posess telepathic abilities themselves, or those to whom Jonias has developed a significant emotional and personal attachment. This is not something that is developed over a few days, but rather months of continued contact.
Mental Profile:
Jonias is a hard-working, determined individual. He has a knack for being well known and well liked. He is usually well-tempered, and even accostomed to treating logic like a Vulcan would.
There are points, however, where being on the wrong side of Jonias' anger can be like facing down a raging Klingon. His people are warlike, only recently turning awat from their more destructive tendancies.
He is usually soft-spoken unless provoked, and fiercly loyal to those he considers his friends. He does tend to be a bit of a workoholic, rarely giving himself time for simple Rest and Relaxation.
STARFLEET RECORD
The Academy:
Actually, in an odd twist of fate, Jonias was the roommate of the Malinche's well-known former counselor: Ledorman Ved. The two took very similar education tracks int he acadamy: Medical. While both took the mandatory psych courses, Jonias was denied a direct counseling track due to the invasive nature of his empathic abilities, as well as his people's well-known predatory nature. He eventually left the Acadamy with a major in Medicine, and a minor in counseling. He graduated with slightly above-average grades, although he was by no means a star student.
Postings:
Until this date, Jonias has not been a member of Starfleet Intelligence. That posting was a recent change for him. Until now, he has enjoyed nearly four years on one of the low-profile starships that always stay within the Terran sector, as a protection for Starfleet Headquarters. As such, he has not seen much action, other than those battles that centered around Terra. Thanks to the high frequency of promotions during the war against the Dominon, he quickly rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Coming to the Malinche:
This particular change has been a most upsetting one for Jonias. He has been taken from a comfortable posting to one which has been reputed for encountering some of the strangest occurances and peoples. Add to that the fact that he has been forced to replace a man he has held a rather good relationship with, in a position he has been denied his entire tour of duty with Starfleet, and you get a pill that is just a little bit bitter.
The added knowledge that that friend, Ledorman Ved, is now considered a wanted felon by Starfleet for the willful murder of an entire starship crew, the theft of yet ANOTHER starship and its crew makes this post all the more difficult.
