FAMILY BACKGROUND
Born into a middle-class Australian family, Jack was an only child. At six years old he was rendered an orphan after a freak shuttlecraft accident killed both of his parents. Moving in with his grandparents in Perth, Western Australia, at the age of fifteen, Jack discovered he had two long lost brothers and a sister from his mother's previous marriage.

Jack Calthorpe is different from most Marine commanders. He is generally not as hard-arsed as others, and has almost always got on better with his subordinates than many of his colleagues. However, Calthorpe does have a mean streak, and this tends to come out when he is responding to a threat. Remarkably cool in a crisis, Calthorpe possesses a calculative mind and is regarded as one of the best in the Marine service, not only for his people skills but his tactical mind as well. To his friends, Calthorpe can be a pretty good bloke to get along with. To his enemies, and to those that challenge his authority, Calthorpe can be as hard as stone. And usually comes down on them like a ton of the same.
STARFLEET RECORD
Despite joining Starfleet Academy, he found he didn't really like the idea of serving in Starfleet. At the suggestion of a friend, after his graduation he applied for the Starfleet Marine Academy. Calthorpe was selected for the command course, three years of grueling physical and mental torture. Finally graduating from the Marine Academy, Calthorpe was first posted not as a raw Private, but as a Starfleet Ensign on the USS Hood, serving as a Security Officer. Finally after seven months of tedium, Calthorpe was given his first Marine posting at Starbase 67, with rank of Staff Sergeant. He served on Starbase 67 as a Staff Sergeant and Second Lieutenant before finally being granted command of the Special Operations team on the starbase with a rank of Major. In addition to the four years as a grunt, Calthorpe commanded the team for another five years, becoming famous for the extraction of twenty-six Federation and Klingon ambassadors from a conference on Antares after it was threatened by Romulan saboteurs.
Calthorpe though finally reached a point where he was sick of being on a starbase. He longed to return to a ship. So it was that he said good-bye to Starbase 67 and set off to command the Marine unit aboard the USS Renegade, where he stayed for four years before being assigned to the USS Malinche.
